Trauma: Establishing Safety
Video review from an eminent North Wales Counsellor: I found it to be an excellent recap for counselling and listening skills and a good resource for understanding trauma and coping strategies for host families. A recommended resource for them to view before hosting the families.
We are free to share the video or insights you gained from the webinar with our teams, churches, or networks.
Do submit any comments or questions you have from the webinar to: info@europeanfreedomnetwork.org. These will help to design future webinars.

GOOD NEIGHBOURS
If you are going to be a Good Neighbour to support a host family and their guests, discuss safeguarding with them and follow good practice guidelines.
SAFE GUARDING TRAINING
The Welsh Government recommends everyone involved, in any regard, with volunteering to support Ukrainian Refugees should complete the Social Care Wales Group A Safeguarding e-learning course. This has just been made public and is accessible for all.
Keeping Children Safe has some excellent resources and from time to time free training courses
Welcome churches training
Join the Ukraine Welcomer Training, come and learn about Ukrainian culture, good practice in welcoming newly arriving refugees, grow in trauma awareness and hear about how you, as a church, can reach out and warmly welcome newly arriving Ukrainians arriving in the UK.
Creating a Safe Place
Safeguarding is all about keeping you safe and those who visit your HUB, or who support the host family.
HOSTS
Currently Host families do not need a DBS to sign up to host. However, once a visa has been issued, your Local Government will get in touch with you. It may actually be after your guests have arrived. On the visit the LA will assess whether you need a DBS and if so will facilitate it and cover the cost.
VOLUNTEERS
DBS’ are not always required, and Enhanced DBS’ are only needed for working with vulnerable adults and children. Ukrainians are not actually refugees, as they are coming to UK on visas. As such not all adults are vulnerable - the elderly may well be and if an adult needs taking to hospital, they may be classed as vulnerable. Enhanced DBS’ can only be applied for through a registered organisation, such as a church or perhaps sports clubs, Soroptomists, Lyons and Rotary Clubs. If you are going to provide volunteering to support Ukrainians, talk to the organisation you want to volunteer with and discuss the areas you are likely to be involved in.
